Ashton-Under-Lyne: Doorstep Green
Ashton Renewal Area was set up in 1996 to tackle social, economic and housing problems. In 2002, 252 terraced houses were demolished to make way for 102 larger homes. During the redevelopment consultation, local residents requested new green space in the area as they had access only to a local park across a busy main road and there was nowhere safe for their children to play.
Ashton Renewal Regeneration Partnership included a small green space in the master plan for the redevelopment, with the aim of ensuring the area became a safe place for children to play and locals to meet. Doorstep Green meets the needs of the local community and enhances the local environment. Its success has raised the profile of the area and demonstrated successful local ownership.
Creating and funding the space has depended on partnerships between the local authority, a housing association, government agencies and local residents. The green has provided a means of binding together the old and new communities.
